Advice for travelers
Weather
The temperature ranges from 15-25 C in Dubai in January. Please ensure that you pack appropriately for this temperature, and are prepared for the air-conditioning!
Dress Code
The dress code for the week is business attire. Please note that Abu Dhabi tends to be more conservative than Dubai. This is especially important for the women in the group. Please refrain from wearing short skirts or displaying bare shoulders
Alcohol
Open consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited. Drinking is only permitted in licensed bars and clubs. All alcohol is forbidden in the Emirate of Sharjah.
Advice for LGBT travellers
The UAE has anti-LGBT laws. LGBT students are encouraged to remain discreet.
Advice for couples
Though very modern in appearance, laws are based on conservative cultural norms. “Sex outside of marriage” laws are strictly enforced. No mixed gender roommate pairings are permitted for non-married couples. Married couples with different surnames should bring a copy of marriage certificate in case they are asked by the hotel.
Travelling with medication
Please be aware that the UAE restricts travellers from bringing many prescription medications into the country. Please see http://abudhabi.usembassy.gov/restricted_medication.html
Health advice for travellers
Since 2013, cases of MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) have been reported in UAE, though it is not widespread. Basic health precautions (including frequent hand washing and avoiding touching your face with your hands) are recommended. More information can be found on the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov/CORONAVIRUS/MERS/
